When I was kid, my sister used to chase me around the house with a tablespoon of peanut butter. I hated peanut butter…still do. Upholding the most basic tenants of sibling persecution, she would exploit my weakness in the best way she knew how. She probably has a similar story about me – of course, none come to mind. Let’s just acknowledge that this is what siblings do…they like to torture each other.
Most of these memories are from my childhood. We are all grown up now…and while we engage in the occasional gentle chiding, we have retired the common weaponry from the past. We are grown-ups after all.
This new level of maturity was apparent this weekend when the Saints played the Bears. My sister, her husband, and their four boys are all GIANT Bears fans. They have made the pilgrimage to Solider field, they named one of their dogs “Payton”, and the boys’ football play has been likened to “Sweetness” himself. The NFC Championship game in 2006 saw some jabbing amongst us and maybe a prank here and there. But that was five years ago…we are older, wiser, and classier now. For this week’s game, the sentiment was conciliatory – “tough game”, “worthy opponent”, “wish you luck”. We modeled the best fan behavior possible.
In the wake of yesterday’s game, I want to maintain that same level of class. I won’t bring up the 2006 Championship game where Bears fans were spitting on Saints players wives at Soldier field. I won’t write about Jay Cutler’s intimate familiarity with Superdome turf. I won’t whisper a word of the Bears only athletic forte being Matt Forte. Or the almighty Hester’s inability to muster anything significant. I’m just not that kind of girl.
Instead, I simply say to my sister and her family, “Good game”.
...an' dat's dat!

Deidre - wanted to write a quick note letting you know how much I enjoyed your post "Ode To My Sister" and its connection to the Saints / Bears game. It takes a special writer to merge the personal with what (though we might claim it is) is the non-personal. Certainly a different approach to writing on the subject of NFL football, but a brilliant one, nevertheless. Keep doing what you do with your natural tendency to insert story and personal insight into your work. Will be looking for you in the future :) Jason

Another brilliant post. I too, like the merging personal anecdotes with your with your usual sports commentary. Kudos to you, the Saints .... and long live sibling rivalry and all the warm, fond memories it fosters!

Well played Queen!!
We Bears fans will maintain the civility as well. We would never mention the snowy day in January when the Bears beat the Saints 39-14 or the 123 yards and 2 Td's by Thomas Jones in the NFC Championship game . We would never thump our chests over the 4 turnovers forced by the Monsters of the Midway that day as the chilly winds blew off Lake Michigan. No gloating when the greatest player in the history of the NFL broke the all-time rushing record against those boys from the bayou. We would never think of it.
What we will do is tip our collective hats to the Saints and their fans and admit that was a butt kicking of the highest order. Great post and by the way, your sister sounds pretty awesome!
Don't worry I won't disappear!
Go Bears!!!!

Touche, sweetness! I was hoping no one would bring that up. But you are too quick and too savvy. While I focus on the Saints each week, I'll be certain to keep an eye on the Bears - the banter is too much fun. Now I have something to write about during the bye week!

Welcome back Sweetness, I have to say I love the witty barbs you trade and challenges you present to the moderator. You are quite the writer too.. have you thought of writing your own blog? Say on baseball?? I am a Red Sox fan, who do you follow?

Oh how great sibling rivalry is but what is even sweeter is when you have that rivalry with your mother. I am so BLESSED to still have her in my life and yes I still talk trash and take her money. I honestly can say that I have more bragging rights over her than she has over me. I wish both teams much success this season. And for sportswidow if you want to read good blogs on baseball log onto the YANKEES and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
